TRUE SPRING ARRIVES
![]() | |||||
In the Southern Hemisphere, the 2026 spring equinox (also known as the vernal equinox) will occur today Wednesday, 23 September 2026 at 10:07 am AEST.
This astronomical milestone marks the official tipping point where the Sun crosses the Earth's equator from north to south, transitioning the Southern Hemisphere into longer days and shorter nights.
🌍 What Happens During the Equinox
- Nearly Equal Day and Night: Derived from the Latin for "equal night," the equinox means the Earth's tilt is side-on to the Sun, giving both hemispheres roughly 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
- The "Equilux" Illusion: Because Earth's atmosphere bends (refracts) sunlight, we can actually see the Sun just before it rises and just after it sets. Because of this, the actual day of perfectly equal light and dark (the equilux) occurred a few days earlier, around Saturday, 19 September, and Sunday, 20 September, across most of Australia.
- True East and West: Only on the equinox does the Sun rise almost exactly due east and set almost exactly due west for everyone on Earth.
While the September equinox marks the beginning of astronomical spring, it differs from how everyday calendar seasons are tracked down under: 📌
- Meteorological Spring: Began on 1 September and runs until 30 November. This system is used by meteorologists and Australians alike to group the seasons cleanly into three-month blocks based on temperature cycles.
- Astronomical Spring: Starts at the exact moment of the equinox on 23 September and concludes at the summer solstice on 22 December 2026.
- Moving forward, daylight will continue to increase daily by a few minutes until the hemisphere reaches peak daylight at the summer solstice in late December.
